Algal Biotechnology

Turning sunlight and CO₂ into green gold.

We develop photobioreactor systems and cultivation protocols for microalgae that simultaneously capture CO₂, produce high‑value lipids (biodiesel), and generate protein‑rich biomass for feed.

From Photon to Fuel

We cultivate high‑lipid microalgae (e.g., Chlorella, Nannochloropsis) in closed photobioreactors with real‑time monitoring of light, temperature, pH, and nutrient feed.

🌿 1. Strain Selection

High‑throughput screening of local isolates for growth rate, lipid productivity, and CO₂ tolerance.

⚡ 2. Photobioreactor Operation

Flat‑panel and tubular PBRs with LED illumination, automated nutrient dosing, and continuous harvesting.

🧪 3. Lipid Extraction & Transesterification

Soxhlet extraction with green solvents, followed by acid‑catalysed transesterification to biodiesel.

Current Highlights

  • ✓ Isolated a thermotolerant Chlorella strain suitable for outdoor cultivation in tropical climates.
  • ✓ Integrated flue‑gas CO₂ sparging system achieving >90% CO₂ capture efficiency.
  • ✓ Optimised two‑stage cultivation (nutrient‑rich → nutrient‑starved) to boost lipid accumulation.
